Flow Cytometry Expert (Ref. CF/25/08)
Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
Your role & our team
IRB Barcelona seeks to recruit a dedicated Flow Cytometry Expert to support the day-to-day operations of its newly established Flow Cytometry Service. Currently equipped with two instruments (BD FACSymphony S6 and BD FACSymphony A5 SE), the service is designed to provide IRB researchers with high-quality training, technical assistance, and scientific guidance with the aim to empower scientific discovery through accessible, expert-driven cytometry support.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual who is eager to learn and grow within the role, and who brings the personal competences needed to thrive in a service-based environment, including strong interpersonal skills and a high degree of initiative.
Key responsibilities:
- Daily operation of the cell sorter and provide user support on the analyzer platform.
- Provide technical support and expert advice on flow cytometry, experimental design, panel design, protocol optimization and execution.
- Provide support in flow cytometry software and data analysis.
- Provide comprehensive training in flow cytometry fundamentals, data analysis and the use of flow cytometry analyzers.
- Manage and perform preventive and corrective maintenance of cytometers and cell sorters under their responsibility.
- Perform quality control and quality assurance procedures.
- Monitor equipment usage and prepare periodic reports to evaluate resource optimization and identify new needs.
- Management of reports and data backups.
- General lab organization and administrative tasks.
You have:
- A degree in immunology, biology, chemistry or related fields.
- Familiarity and hands-on experience (>2 years) with flow cytometry equipment (including cell sorting), flow cytometry procedures, flow cytometric data analysis, and technical troubleshooting.
- Good working knowledge of common flow cytometry software (FACSDiva, FlowJo).
- Experience in general lab management (e.g. purchasing and stock controls, working with field service engineers, routine calibration and QC, waste management).
- Proficiency in Spanish and English.
- Capacity to work both independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Troubleshooting capacity and attention to detail.
- Custom oriented.
You might also have
- Previous experience in a flow cytometry platform.
- Experience in multicolor panel design.
- Experience in training users in flow cytometry applications and use of instrumentation.
- Prior hands-on experience in operating and troubleshooting a BD FACSymphony S6 and/or BD FACSymphony A5 SE.
