Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
IRB Barcelona is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Research Assistant to join our Amino Acid Transporters and Disease laboratory led by Professor Manuel Palacín.
The successful candidate will participate in the translational project called "Development of a new biological drug that sequesters the uptake of essential amino acids to specifically deliver cytotoxic payloads in the treatment of colorectal cancer" financed by the Plan Estatal de Investigación Científica, Técnica y de Innovación-PROYECTO DE COLABORACIÓN PÚBLICO PRIVADA for 3 years (2025-7).
DUTIES:
- Conduct experimental research related to amino acid transporters, including transport activity, reconstitution, expression, purification and structure determination.
- Assist in data collection, analysis, and interpretation.
- Collaborate with senior researchers on project development.
- Maintain laboratory equipment and manage lab organization.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
Must Have – Required:
- Knowledge: Bachelor’s degree in Biochemistry, Biomedicine, Biotechnology or a related field.

- Attention to detail and accuracy.
- Highly motivated and collaborative person.
- Willing to keep on learning.
- Ability to work independently in a demanding research environment.
- Languages: Fluent in English
Desirable:
- Master’s degree in a relevant field or 1-2 years of laboratory research experience.
- Experience in molecular biology techniques, cell culture, protein expression and purification and/or protein analysis.
- Experience in membrane proteins.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills.
