Research Officer for the Bioinformatics / Biostatistics Unit (ref. CF/24/09)
Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 29 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 500 members and 45 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
Your Role & Our Team
The Bioinformatics / Biostatistics Unit collaborates with the IRB Barcelona’s community in the design and analysis of their experiments, either in vivo, in vitro or in silico. The unit is committed to providing a competitive advantage by developing tailored solutions and conducting methodological research. To do so, we engage in bioinformatics and statistical consulting from experimental design to publication, resulting in close collaborations with experimentalists in every stage of the way. We have an outstanding record of publications in high impact journals and offer a unique environment for practicing the most exciting science.
IRB Barcelona is seeking a dedicated Senior Research Officer to support our Biostatistics/Bioinformatics Core Facility. The successful candidate will participate in data analysis and methodology development for very diverse data types and research projects. The Officer will help supervise junior members of the Unit, visiting students and will offer consultation for researchers at IRB Barcelona. Moreover, she/he actively participate in the generation of material and teaching of statistics courses and will help setup and apply best practices for data management and reproducible science.
Key responsibilities
- Provide support in biological data analysis: process and analyze data from diverse platforms such as next generation sequencing, clinical databases, proteomics, single cell data, etc.
- Develop tailored solutions and cutting-edge methodology for the analysis of data in collaboration with experimental researchers
- Provide access, manage information and analyze data from public databases such as dbSNP, 1000 genomes, GWAS, GEO, TCGA
- Provide statistical consulting to the IRB's community
- Implement and develop methodologies for analyzing single cell RNAseq data
- Design material for statistics courses
- Supervise junior members and visiting students
You have
Experience:
- Programming experience in R for applied statistical analyses
- Experience in analyzing scRNAseq data
- Minimum of three years working with biomedical data
- Publication record in the fields of statistics or biostatistics
Qualifications:
- PhD in Statistics, bioinformatics, computational biology or related fields
Languages:
- Excellent use of written and spoken English
- Spanish and Catalan in professional setting
Technical Skills:
- Professional programming in R
- Ability to apply statistical concepts to biological settings
Competences:
- Good communication skills and ability to learn new biological concepts
- Ability to work in multiple projects simultaneously
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Highly motivated and collaborative person.
- Willing to keep on learning.
- Ability to work independently in a demanding research environment.

- Experience in managing data according to best practices in the field
