Research Assistant for Colorectal Cancer Laboratory (ref. LAB/23/10)
Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 28 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 members and 35 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
IRB Barcelona is seeking an enthusiastic Research Assistant for the Colorectal Cancer Laboratory led by Dr. Eduard Batlle.
The laboratory studies the evolution of intestinal stem cells and their ecosystem during cancer progression, with particular interests in unraveling how the tumor microenvironment facilitates immune evasion and metastasis. The ultimate goal is to obtain information that help design new therapeutic and diagnostic tools.
This contract will be funded by the project ‘Analysis of extracellular matrix drivers of inmune evasion in metastatic colorectal cancer’. Reference PRYGN223027BATL from the ‘Fundació Associació Española contra el Cancer (FAECC)’.
DUTIES:
- To supervise the Batlle Lab colonies in the animal facility.
- To write, update and execute procedures and protocols for experimental cancer research in vivo.
- To write, update and perform PCR protocols for genotyping experimental models.
- To coordinate experimental work in vivo.
- To train researchers in experimental work in vivo
- To perform Lab management tasks such as ordering lab reagents, material, organizing lab maintenance.
- To promote the flow of information by establishing, utilizing, and maintaining an effective communication within and outside the laboratory.
- To keep high quality standards of research.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
Must Have – Required:
- Experience: Bachelor degree in a related field. 10 years of proven experience in a similar position.
- Knowledge: Extensive knowledge of experimental work with cancer research models.
- Skills: The candidate should have high organization capacity and should be tidiness, service-oriented person and willing to learn.
- Languages: Fluent in English.
Desirable:
- Master degree in a related field.
- Experienced in surgical procedures
- Molecular Biology Skills (PCR)

Working conditions: Permanent contract (científico-técnico) linked to the PRYGN223027BATL (FAECC) project. Employed in compliance with Spanish legislation and regulations under a full-time contract.
