FUNCTIONAL GENOMICS CORE FACILITY MANAGER (ref.CF/22/02)
Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.
The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 27 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.
IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 members and 30 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).
IRB Barcelona is seeking a highly motivated research and service-oriented manager to enlarge the services pipeline currently offered by its Functional Genomics Core Facility (FGC). The FGC is charged with providing the research community at IRB Barcelona with cutting-edge techniques, including tools for genomic analysis and alterations of gene expression, as well as single-cell technologies. Candidates for this post must be willing to tackle the challenges of a highly dynamic platform, which involve managing its growth, increasing the number of technical approaches offered, ensuring and following up equipment upgrade, and proactively building new professional networks.
DUTIES:
- To provide support to the IRB Barcelona research community.
- To manage the services and projects undertaken in the facility, interpret, and communicate results.
- To coordinate the facility staff conducting the projects.
- To participate in the strategic planning of new developments based on the needs of the institute’s research community.
- To develop technology and participate in the implementation of novel processes and procedures within the genomics field, with a special focus on the single-cell technologies.
- To promote synergies and collaborations at the local, national and particularly international level.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS:
Must Have – Required:
- Experience: more than 5 years of research in genomics.
- Knowledge: technologies related to genomic analysis, in particular next-generation sequencing (NGS) and single-cell approaches. Experience with NGS platforms, current analytical platforms, and associated informatics and computational skills are required.
- Skills: excellent communication (mostly in English), leadership, and interpersonal skills. A service-based orientation and prior and solid managerial experience with a core facility or similar service are essential.
Desirable:

WORKING CONDITIONS & ENTITLEMENTS:
- Working conditions: Permanent contract. Employed in compliance with Spanish legislation and regulations under a full-time contract. Employees receive the benefits of the Spanish Social Security system covering sickness, maternity/paternity leaves and injuries at work.
