Created in 2005 by the Generalitat de Catalunya (Government of Catalonia) and the University of Barcelona, IRB Barcelona is a Severo Ochoa Centre of Excellence—a seal that was awarded in 2011.

The institute is devoted to conducting research of excellence in biomedicine and to transferring results to clinical practice, thus improving people’s quality of life, while simultaneously promoting the training of outstanding researchers, technology transfer, and public communication of science. Its 27 laboratories and seven core facilities address basic questions in biology and are orientated to diseases such as cancer, metastasis, Alzheimer’s, diabetes, and rare conditions.

IRB Barcelona is an international centre that hosts 400 members and 35 nationalities. It is located in the Barcelona Science Park. IRB Barcelona forms part of the Barcelona Institute of Science and Technology (BIST) and the “Xarxa de Centres de Recerca de Catalunya” (CERCA).


IRB Barcelona seeks to incorporate a research assistant to join the Asymmetric Synthesis Research Unit, for a 5 months position.

The candidate will participate and perform the activities, tasks, and reports within a novel TGF-beta receptor type 1 (ALK5) inhibitor; for the treatment of metastatic cancer and fibrosis" (ALK5_SMI), co-financed by the Ministry of Science and Innovation - State Research Agency (AEI) and by the Recovery and Resilience Mechanism of the European Union. Reference: PDC2021-121226-I00/AEI/10.13039/501100011033.




  • Synthetize multigram quantities of TGF-beta inhibitors
  • Optimize the synthesis and scale up to industrial scale.


Must Have – Required: 

  • Experience: Organic synthesis; process chemistry; TGF-beta inhibitors
  • Knowledge: organic methodology; purification of organic compounds. Characterization of organic compounds; NMR; Crystallization
  • Skills: Use of NMR, Chem-Draw; Mestre-Nova; use of MPLC purification system
  • Languages: Proficiency in English



  • Experience: Synthesis of TGF-beta inhibitors
  • Knowledge: Medicinal chemistry
  • Skills: scale-up, process chemistry. Highly motivated.
